I anxiously await, almost beg, for this day every year. Its a day of laughter, simplicity, camaraderie, and rejoicing. Nestled between the ridges of the Appalachian Mountains is the Rose River Farm, the home of the Project Healing Waters 2-Fly Tournament. The steep mountain walls form an amphitheater where laughter and cheering echo through the valley as a Veteran lands another trout. Crisp flags of red, white, and blue line the rusted barbed wire fence that forms the perimeter of this joyous place. The uproar of cheering forces the onlookers to rapidly gather as if on the 18th at Augusta. Another fish brought to net.
For the participants, this is a location of pure peace and happiness. Their previous life is lost, if only for a moment, by the cool waters of the Rose River. They begin to understand that the mind is the point to which all accomplishments are made, and with every hook set they gain the confidence needed to continue on.
For the guides, this is the event where our chosen path is validated entirely by the simple but life changing connection we make with our partner for the day; a disabled Veteran of the United States of America. Its a connection that will never be broken…Until the next time, Gerry…keep it tight.
